Agility dog training for kids?

June 25th, 2010

Hi I am a kid who is interested in training my puppy in agility. Is there any training classes in Washington? Hopefully near the Tri-cities.

Agility is an extremely fun sport for you and your dog. It’s all about having fun, and eventually you will be able to enter trials and earn your dog titles.

I am assuming you are talking about Washington state – hopefully I am right. Here is a start. Adding your city to the search bar will give you a better search, but here is a list. If there are none near you, try typing in dog training centers instead of agility training – many will have agility training too.

When should you begin obedience training with a dog?

June 25th, 2010

When did you start obedience training with your dog? How old should they be? I will be getting an English Bulldog and he will be 20 weeks old. When should I start enrolling him in professional obedience training?
I don’t even have my dog yet :-)

You cannot legally attend an Obedience school or class until the pup has had its final shot at 16 weeks which is very important so usually Start around the 16 week period but you can practice at hoe unless you do not know what to do.If he is 20 weeks old and fully inoculated including kennel cough you can enrol him ASAP but check all the Obedience clubs in your area some are better than others and know what they are doing. You do not need a trainer all you need is how t use the check chain and have full control of your puppy

Puppy Socialization – Don’t Neglect This Important Part of Training Your Dog

June 22nd, 2010

Let’s face it, as a new dog owner, you probably haven’t thought too much about puppy socialization.  However, this is a very important part of dog training.  Many cases of canine aggression could have been prevented if the dog’s owner had only known how to socialize a puppy.

Why Is It So Important To Socialize Your Dog?

When you expose your dog to lots of different people, different animals, and different places, he learns for himself that new sights, sounds, and people are fun, not scary.

It’s better to start socializing your dog while he’s still a puppy.  You may not know that the best age to socialize a puppy is when he’s between the ages of three and twelve weeks.  A young dog who has good experiences with new people, other dogs, and even cats will be much friendlier and less fearful of people.  This helps to prevent aggressive dog behavior towards strangers when he gets older.

However, it’s never too late to socialize your dog.  It may take a little longer with an older dog, but you can still use canine socialization in order to help your pooch overcome a fear of strangers and be a happier, more trustworthy friend.

What’s The Best Way To Socialize A Puppy?

Actually it’s not that difficult to socialize your dog, if you’re willing to make a little effort.

Many dog trainers suggest a puppy preschool.  This is a series of group-training classes for puppies and their owners.  Usually there are about 10 puppies and their people, along with a couple of dog trainers.  During these classes, the puppies start to learn basic dog obedience commands like sit, stay, and others.

But the obedience lessons aren’t the most important part of puppy preschool.  The play sessions are where your puppy learns essential social skills.  During the play sessions, the puppies are let off their leashes and allowed to play with each other.  Why is this important?

First, your puppy is learning how to get along with unfamiliar dogs.

Second, since there are other dog owners and a couple of dog trainers present, this means lots of unfamiliar people, too.  This is a great way for your puppy to learn not to be afraid of new people.

Third, it’s a controlled environment.  The dog trainers make sure things don’t get too wild.

Don’t Stop Puppy Socialization Too Soon

Many dog owners make the mistake of thinking that since their dog has been to puppy preschool, their puppy is now socialized.  This mistaken idea can lead to problems later on.

It’s important to continue to expose your young dog to new faces, new animals, and new places.  Sometimes puppies who seemed to be well socialized at a younger age “forget” those early lessons.  By the time your dog is between eight months and two years old, he may become fearful of people and start showing canine aggression towards strangers.

Here’s some food for thought:  even though your puppy has learned basic skills during his first few months, it’s important to keep reinforcing puppy socialization lessons throughout your dog’s life.

German Shepherd Dog Training Essentials

June 22nd, 2010

The German Shepherd Dog is a very noble breed with excellent working abilities. These dogs are capable of performing long hours of physical exercise without showing signs of extreme exhaustion. They are often used as police dogs, guard dogs, search and rescue dogs and also therapy dogs. The German Shepherd Dog is one of the best examples of a perfect working dog.

The German Shepherd Dog is also one of the most popular family and pet dogs because of its many good properties. Owning a German Shepherd Dog comes along with a great responsibility to train the dog. It is very important that the owner shall at least do basic obedience with their dog. That includes sit and down on command, sit and down stays and loose leash heeling. The recall command is probably the most important command of all for any dog, but even more so with the German Shepherd Dog.

German Shepherds are very strong dogs and you do not want to be dragged around the block when you take it for a walk. You need to be in control. When you have visitors, you do not want your German Shepherd to jump up against your friends. It is essential that you start training your German Shepherd puppy the moment it arrives at your home. From day one you should establish the packing order. Your puppy should not for one moment get the idea that he must fulfil the role of alpha.

Things your German Shepherd puppy should not be allowed:

  • Your puppy will be very cute and beautiful, they all are, but he should not be allowed on the bed or on the couch.
  • He should not be allowed to play bite any human. If he wants to bite your hand, say “NO” in a growling voice and give him a chewable toy.

  • The most essential thing you should do with your GSD puppy:

  • Your puppy should be well socialized especially the first few months of its life, but preferably for the rest of its life. Take him with you wherever you go. Let him meet other dogs, people and especially children
  • German Shepherd Dogs are such clever dogs and easily trainable and so willing to please their owners that it is really sad when owners do not train their dogs.

There are so many disciplines in which their dogs can excel for example:

  • Obedience
  • Tracking
  • Protection work
  • Agility
  • Therapy work (depending on the temperament)

  • Which method should be used for training the German Shepherd Dog?

It is wrongly believed that because the GSD is such a strong dog, that you should use strong and harsh methods to train the dog. Actually it is just the opposite. GSD’s are sensitive dogs and so clever that they learn very fast when you use positive reinforcement methods with lost of treats and praise. Clicker training is ideal for training any dog but also the GSD. You still have to be very firm especially when it is a male dog going through his hormonal phases, but the key is consistency and patience. If properly trained your German Shepherd will be a joy and companion for many years.
