How does one start training their dog for agility competitions?

September 27th, 2010

And how old should they be before starting to teach them how to do agility?

A dog should be a year old before you start jumping & weaving them much. (You can’t compete, at least in AKC agility trials, until your dog is a minimum of 15 months old.)

Obedience is an important foundation for agility work. Many agility trainers require you to take an obedience class (or demonstrate your dog’s obedience training) before starting an agility class.

To find a trainer in your area, check this website. This have trainers from all over the US, and some in other countries as well.

the general category of such learning is called conditioning in psychology. Whatever the dog learns are actually conditioned reflexes that are reinforced by useing rewards for expected behaviour and punishments for not behaving as required.

Could I toilet train my 2yo using those puppy training pads?

September 27th, 2010

You know the ones you use to house train a puppy, he is a terrier and pees everywhere anyway.
I’m talking about my 2yo son. My dogs were toilet trained by 8 weeks old, come on get with it.
Lenna, no need for the stars, I can figure out what you wrote there. I am not a moron I am university educated just having trouble toilet training my child. How about if you don’t like my Q don’t answer it.

Absolutely! I let my 2yo son run around nekkid and when he has to go he just runs over to the puppy pad and has at it. Works well for us!

Where can I do dog agility in Ireland?

September 24th, 2010

I live in south Dublin in Ireland and I really want to start agility training with my dog but I cant find a place to train. I know of the centre in Blanchardstown but I’ve also heard that there is a club in Tallaght. If there is a club in Tallaght, would anyone have a website address or phone number or even know were it is?
If not then is there any other place in Dublin were I can bring my dog to train?

Contact the IKC in Ballsbridge, they will assist you. I trained Max by book, it is not too difficult. Just takes time and patience.

does dog training/obedience training really work and will it help my dog?

September 24th, 2010

I have 2 pitbulls a male and a female, both fixed. Female is almost 3 years and male is about 2 and half.

I also have 2 kids, a 19 month old and a 3 month old. Female dog, absolutely fine, loves them. male dog fine with baby, getting worse with toddler.

Sometimes the male dog is fine, licks and plays with my son (oldest) but since he has started walking (about 3-4 months ago) he has started growling at him. Which worries me immensley. I love my dogs and treat them like my children. However if i HAD to i would give my dog away and if it came to it i may have to get him put down. I really do not want to get rid of my dog, i love him so much. But im not willing to risk my childrens lives.

I live in new zealand and they have a zero pitbull/big dog policy pretty much, pitbulls HAVE to be neutered (so they will eventually die out), muzzled in public and on a lead at all time. If a pitbull is given to the local spca (the only shelther there is) they are put down immediatly. They do not get judged on a case by case basis. However my dog wouldnt pass the temprament (sp?) test anyway. he is terrible with other animals and now kids :( .

When he was a puppy he had LOTS of socilization and obediance training until he was about 8 months old. We are thinking of starting it up again, but would it help or should i start looking for a new home for him?
he gets daily exercise with my husband he takes both of them on an hour-hour an a half walk every day
so its best to get him put down? i feel so guilty getting him and then doing that to him. its not fair. guess im going to have to have a serious talk with my husband. guess all my family (parents, grandparenst etc) will be happy

Hi,

Basic commands not only teach helpful skills, they reinforce your role as your dog’s leader. Using treats to lure your dog into the correct position or place, and then to reward her for obeying, is one of the easiest and most dog-friendly methods. Here’s more info:

Help with house training my puppy when he goes indoor after taking him outdoors?

September 24th, 2010

How do you train a puppy to go outdoors and what do you do when he does indoors after being let out. Appreciate all the help with this and also if someone has good training to train puppy quickly on chewing and biting.

http://www.midwesthomes4pets.com/Information/HowToCrateTrain.aspx After you have walked your puppy and he doesn’t potty crate him when you get home for about 20 minutes then walk him again. That will remind him what the walk was for to begin with.Don’t let him out and not watch to make sure he does go potty. You need to see him go. If he’s biting you playing take his lip and pinch it against his teeth and tell him no bite. Then have a toy ready to give him to show him what’s OK to chew.
