I am wanting to train my beautiful chocolate Lab puppy young to obey basic commands and avert annoying behaviors i.e. jumping, nipping, clawing, etc. I have seen numerous "advertisements guaranteed to work (at a steep price), but want to get the underground opinion before deciding! Thanks for the input!

I have a lab/collie mix. Labs are smart dogs and kind of easy to train. For sit…..push your dog’s butt down and repeat saying sit. If the dog doesn’t say no and keep repeating the command. It took my dog a week and a half to get a few commands. I got my dog at 12 weeks as well. When your dog jumps on you…say no and sit. Nipping you grab the dogs mouth and say no and keep repeating it. It will take 3-4 weeks for you to train the dog. If you work and you stay with relatives have them repeat the commands with dog as well. Hope I helped.

I strongly recommend taking some agility classes before getting your own equipment. That way, you know the proper and safe way to have the dog approach the obstacles (a dog can get injured if equipment isn’t used properly), and also, if either you or your dog don’t like agility, you haven’t sunk a lot of money into it. Also, it’s much easier to train a dog to use the obstacles the correct way the first time, so you don’t unwittingly teach the dog the incorrect way.

I was wondering if I should, cause to me it seems like if i had specific commands to give to him, then it would be easier to control him in any given situation.

BQ: If I put him through obedience training and attack training, will they negatively effect or offset each other? Is attack dog training basically obedience training with an edge?

Start with obedience- it should be 100% mandatory with rotties. You need a strong foundation before pursuing schutzhund or other specialty training. They will not counteract each other- they should build on each other. I’m not familiar with any formalized "attack" training- please research breed-appropriate activities.

We just got a new puppy…a boxer/pit bull mix and want to take him dog training classes. I was thinking about going to Petco and using their puppy training class. Has anyone used these classes before, and how did they work out?
And what is the cost of the 6 week puppy training class?
