Shelter Dog Obedience Training

October 26th, 2010

Watch some of Vinny Love’s basic obedience skills.

I rescued him from a high-kill shelter with dog aggression issues, and have been training him myself for the past 2 years.

I didn’t raise him from when he was a puppy. In fact, I know nothing of his history. He’s not purebred. And he didn’t have the perfect manners, in fact he had aggression issues! However, with training, he was able to transform into a great dog with wonderful manners. I see tons of awesome purebred Retrievers, German Shepherds, Australian Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Border Collies, and Jack Russell Terriers doing stunts and obedience but Vinny and I are proof that mix-breed shelter dogs can do it too, EVEN the ones with behavior issues!

Our goal through these videos is to not only showcase Vinny Love’s talent, but more importantly, show the world that there are MILLIONS of remarkable animals just like Vinny being euthanized and KILLED in animal shelters worldwide. If Vinny and I have even inspired 1 person to adopt his/her next animal through our videos, we’ve done our job.

Would training my dog in agility maybe curb some of his agressive tendancies?

October 22nd, 2010

He’ll be a year old on the 27th of this month. He’s an Australian shepherd, he HATES children, anyone under, say, 9, and he doesn’t like anyone else except for people who come around to our house on a regular basis. He’s not dog agressive, though.

As a matter of fact I don’t even know WHY he’s agressive. We got him at 9wks, and he’s been around people since the day he was born. Any ideas?

Has your dog been to a group Obedience class? How did he do in that kind of a situation? I can’ t really see Agility training helping a dog with people aggression. I have tried to do some beginning, basic Agility training with dogs with fear aggression. Not something those dogs enjoyed. These dogs were very afraid, could never relax, spent all their class time cowering, running off & trying to leave, barking, growling & lunging at people & the other dogs. And something as simple as trying to help their owner with them on the obstacles caused them to snap. Even in an Agility training class, there are 8-10 new people & some of them may even be kids. And the people are running & yelling & laughing & clapping. The dogs are running & jumping & playing & barking. The instructor & assistants often need to work closely with you & touch your dog to help you help them with the obstacles at first. A lot of stuff that would scare a dog like yours & tend to set them off. Your dog would be doing most of this work off leash too, so you wouldn’t be able to control his behavior. It would just be a recipe for disaster in my opinion.
What I recommend is a Vet evaluation to make sure there isn’t a medical reason for your dog’s aggression. Then have your Vet recommend a canine behaviorist to evaluate the dog. Maybe the behaviorist can come up with a training plan that can help your dog with his aggression issues. Until then placing the dog in a training class of any kind isn’t in my opinion fair to your dog, you or any of the other dogs & handlers in the class.

Need an expert on indoor puppy training?

October 22nd, 2010

I had tought my two puppies to pee on the training pads.
My aunt thought it was laziest to let my puppies go to the pads.
I’m doing the right thing?

It really depends on you, your situation, and your dogs, as well as the adult size they will reach. I wouldn’t train a large breed pup to use a piddle pad, simply because it isn’t practical in the long run.

I’ve trained my 2 chihuahuas to use a piddle pad. They go outside as well, provided it’s not too cold. But somedays, it’s really just too could for them and they refuse. I can’t blame them, I wouldn’t want to go out there and freeze either.

Some people are for it, some are against it. It’s really about what’s best for you and your situation.

As for me and mine, it’s the right decision for us. And I’m glad I made it, on days where I have places to go and things to do, and might not be back in time. They don’t have to hold it or worse have an accident, they have their piddle pad they can get to, and it’s easy for me to clean it.
