Could i still start training my dog for agility even if he is two years old?

January 2nd, 2012

My dog is a shetland sheepdog. I heard that this is one of the best breads for agility. He loves to work and jump. I would like to start training him for that. But i am wondering if its still ok to start training him even if he is two years old.

of course. It’s a good age to start, he is now mature enough that his growth plates are finished and he most likely has a good obedience start to him I imagine?
Never too late to start a dog in a sport. Have fun! And yes, shelties are very good at agility….

Get out puppy agility: Clicker Training

I have started some distance work with Twix and teaching him to follow my body language. He will need this skill when we are out on the agility course. I am teaching him how to go out and around an object. Many think that one should not use a pole to send a dog around and I have not had a problem with this. My dogs know the difference between 1 weave pole and 12. So, I am not worried at all that this will ruin their weave poles. Here is a short tutorial on how to train this. You might need to use food to lure your dog around the first few times. My dogs all love to work for toys, so that is what I use. They will work for food, but would rather have toys. :)

I threw in some footage of Bandit doing the final product and variations of it. I also added a few tricks at the end, just for fun. :)

Enjoy!

Take care everyone!

dog agility/training?

December 19th, 2011

I am starting dog agility with my puppy I just got. I was wondering how old should the puppy be before I start basic training and than when should I start hurdles etc.?

Do NOT start workin you puppy on Jumps as it can do a lot of damage to a young dog and most trainers don’t reccomend full height jumping until 12-18 months of age. Also same wih weaving I would highly advise against it until you dog is older. For now just focus on and do a lot of foundation work like nose touches, targeting, start line stays, recall to both sides, shadow handling etc. you can also do some work on barless jumps like building focus and drive through them.

But I also highly reccomend looking into proper agility classes. They’re not only a great place to learn but it ensures that your training your dog properly and safely. We started agility class a few months ago with my 5-6 year old mutt with the intention to someday compete and it’s been a great experience. I’ve learned so much and she’s come a long way. We trained for about 2 years on our own and I can’t tell you how much this has helped me as a handler.

But yes agility classes are a huge recomendation. Most facilities have a puppy class you can take to get started with foundation training etc

Here’s an example from a friends puppy class and what you should work on

And an example of a wonderful agility trainer and world team competitor Silvia tirkman working one of her pups on barless jumps

Teaching the Agility Rear Cross/Switch with One Jump

December 14th, 2011

This is how I taught Merlin the rear cross (switch), using just one jump and a clicker. It’s also a how-to video for anyone interested in trying the same technique. You can skip the clicker if you want, but it really helps a lot.

I taught my first agility dog the rear cross using an entire sequence of jumps. That did work, but it took him a while to really “get it.” I used the one-jump method with my second dog and it worked really well, quickly giving my beginner dog a solid understanding of the maneuver.
