Teaching the Agility Rear Cross/Switch with One Jump

December 14th, 2011

This is how I taught Merlin the rear cross (switch), using just one jump and a clicker. It’s also a how-to video for anyone interested in trying the same technique. You can skip the clicker if you want, but it really helps a lot.

I taught my first agility dog the rear cross using an entire sequence of jumps. That did work, but it took him a while to really “get it.” I used the one-jump method with my second dog and it worked really well, quickly giving my beginner dog a solid understanding of the maneuver.

What is the appropriate age to start training dogs with agility ?

December 2nd, 2011

I Have two 11 week old , German Sheppard/ Husky mix puppies. And I was wondering when the appropriate age for agility training, giving them bones, etc. Also if its to young of an age for getting them dog beds? Are they to young (because they might rip it a part) ? And whens the right age for one?
I mean’t Shepherd not Sheppard .

You can start teaching the true "foundation" of agility right now, which is obedience.
Before you get started with any agility work, the dog needs a solid sit/stay and recall.
Do NOT do jumps, full height contact equipment, or weave poles prior to a year old.

You can give them bones whenever, but ensure you supervise them at all times.

I wouldn’t waste any money on a bed yet. You can use old towels or blankets.

Alphabet Drills – C: Agility Dog Training

November 21st, 2011

http://www.pamsdogacademy.com

This is just a few exercises out of my new book called, Alphabet Drills by Nancy Gyes. I will be going to agility camp at the end of the October and want to have Twix running a little better. So, the only way to improve is to practice and train!

We are only on C, but did not film our training session when we did B. Sorry!

You all should run out and buy this book, or just go to http://www.cleanrun.com and pick it up! It is well worth the money.

Have a great day!

I have been working with Twix on many things, but I thought that I would videotape some of the agility things that we have been working on. He is so much fun to work with. I have a long long road ahead when it comes to agility, but he is really loving it and I love working with him, so it is a win win!

Have a great day!

Where is the best place to take my dog for Agility training in Utah?

October 28th, 2011

What places do you recommend? Where have you taken your dog? What was your experience there?
I adopted an awesome border collie a few months ago. He is very intelligent and super focused. I’m getting tired of playing fetch with him and would like to give him a job to do that meets his awesome potential. He needs agility! Any information to get us started would be great! ;-)

Visit the following websites. I’m sure, between all of them, you will find a agility training facility.
